Chinese researchers make new photonic chips for high-contrast image
Chinese researchers have developed a planar photonic chip with tailored angular transmission to obtain high-contrast optical microscopic images.
Researchers from the University of Science and Technology of China have discovered that using a planar photonic chip with tailored angular transmission as the sample substrate, a standard bright-field microscopy can provide both darkfield and total internal reflection (TIR) microscopy images with one experimental set-up.
Bright-field microscopy is one of the simplest optical microscopy, which uses light rays to produce a dark image against a bright background. However, the limitations of bright-field microscopy include low contrast for weakly absorbing samples and low resolution due to the blurry appearance of out-of-focus material.
Although darkfield microscopy and TIR microscopy can solve the problem of low contrast, they need complex optical elements which are difficult to integrate and operate due to their large size.
The new planar photonic chip eliminates the need for a bulky condenser or special objective to realize darkfield or TIR illumination. Thus, it can work as a miniaturized high-contrast-imaging device for the development of versatile and compact microscopes, according to the research article published in the journal Nature Communications.
The photonic chip is simple in structure, easy to integrate, low in cost and easy to operate, said Zhang Douguo, leader of the research team and a professor at the university, adding that it can be applied to produce the images of both specimens in the air and living cells in the liquid environment.

Twitter’s ‘Reactions’ feature is set to arrive soon for iOS users
After the release of numerous new features earlier this year, Twitter is apparently preparing additional features for iOS users, including reactions, downvotes, and sorted replies. According to reverse engineer Nima Owji, the Reactions feature, which began testing a few months ago, is set to arrive soon.
This feature is aimed to enable users the option to better demonstrate how conversations make them feel and to give users “a better understanding of how their Tweets are received” with four new reactions: “tears of joy,” “thinking face,” “clapping hands,” and “weeping face.”
According to the reverse engineer, the microblogging site can already store data about the downvotes feature, which is yet another indication that this feature may be introduced sooner rather than later. The corporation also revised its downvote position, according to the report. It has even included a new tab that explains how to use it.
This month, the company has rolled out its in-app tipping feature to all Android users over the age of 18. According to Twitter, the “Tips” feature is aimed towards users who want to get a little financial help from their followers via Cash App, PayPal, Venmo, and Patreon directly through the app.

Instagram introduces two new features: Finally, Rage Shake
Instagram has verified the presence of two new features that are considered to be fresh additions to the app. The first is named ‘Finally,’ and the second is called ‘Rage Shake’; Instagram’s Head of Product, Adam Mosseri, shared a brief video on his Twitter account that explains the features.
The first is a ‘Finally’ tool, which will allow users to remove a single image from a carousel of photos. To give you an example, if you’ve submitted five pictures to Instagram as part of a single post, you’ll now be able to remove only one of them instead of the entire post.
The video also shows how the feature will function. The ‘Finally’ function is currently accessible on iOS and will be available for Android users soon. According to Mosseri, the function has long been sought by users, and it has now started to roll out.
The ‘Rage Shake’ function, on the other hand, will make it easier for users to report an issue on Instagram. Instagram may be aggravating at times, with photos not uploading and videos being severely compressed.
Users may simply shake their phones to get the option to report a complaint with the ‘Rage Shake’ function. In the United States, the ‘Rage Shake’ is stated to be available for Android and iOS users.
