Spider-Man breaks box office records, earning $300 million worldwide

Spider-Man: No Way Home, the latest Marvel superhero film, is smashing pandemic-era box office records throughout the world. According to Deadline, the picture had already earned $302.9 million globally by Saturday and is expected to surpass the half-billion-dollar mark by Sunday.
The Jon Watts-directed film had the second-largest opening day of all time in the United States on Friday, grossing $121.5 million worldwide. It also earned an additional $181.4 million worldwide on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, bringing its total to $300 million.
No Way Home is only the sixth film to reach that milestone by Saturday, and it’s the first time it’s happened during the pandemic. Given a staggered release in many global markets (it will open in Spider-Man-crazed Japan in January), industry observers anticipate that the film will easily reach the $1 billion mark worldwide over its run.

West Indies postpone Pakistan ODI series after more players test Covid positive

Pakistan Cricket Board and the Cricket West Indies, in a joint statement, on Thursday announced to postpone the ODI series and rescheduled for early June after five more players tested Covid positive raising the total number of positive cases to nine since their arrival in Karachi on December 9.
“On Thursday morning and as part of the PCB Covid-19 protocols, rapid antigen tests were conducted on the remaining 15 West Indies players and six-player support personnel. All 21 members of the West Indies touring party returned negative test results. As such, Thursday’s T20 International (T20I) proceeded as planned.
“However, taking into consideration both the teams’ welfare as well as limited resources in the West Indies side for the ODIs, it has been agreed that the series, which forms part of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League, will be postponed and rescheduled for early June 2022.
“This will provide the West Indies with an equal opportunity to field their best available players for the World Cup qualification matches,” the statement added.
“The West Indies team members, who returned negative results following Wednesday’s PCR and today’s rapid antigen tests, will depart from Pakistan after tonight’s match. Those who have tested positive will complete their isolation in Karachi before their travel arrangements are finalized to allow them to rejoin their families in time for Christmas celebrations,” the statement elaborated.
It further said that Pakistan team members, all of whom have returned PCR negative after Wednesday’s tests, will also be leaving the Managed Event Environment after tonight’s third T20I.
“The CWI would like to thank the PCB for its excellent series arrangements and appreciates its support in rescheduling the ODI series in June 2022.”
West Indies officials said the latest positive test results came from wicketkeeper-batsman Shai Hope, left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein, all-rounder Justin Greaves, assistant coach Roddy Estwick and physician Akshai Mansingh.
Left-arm pace bowler Sheldon Cottrell and all-rounders Roston Chase and Kyle Mayers tested positive on Saturday, along with a team official.
In October, New Zealand quit their first tour to Pakistan in 18 years shortly before the opening match was due to start after a security alert.
That was followed by England’s decision to withdraw visits by their men’s and women’s teams scheduled for October.

Elon Musk named Time magazine person of the year

Time magazine on Monday named Tesla chief and space entrepreneur Elon Musk as its person of the year 2021, citing his embodiment of the technological shifts but also troubling trends reshaping people’s lives.
Musk — who overtook Amazon founder Jeff Bezos this year to become the world’s wealthiest person — wields impact on Earth with his Tesla electric car company and beyond our planet with his SpaceX rockets.
“Musk’s rise coincides with broader trends of which he and his fellow technology magnates are part cause and part effect,” Time editor-in-chief Edward Felsenthal wrote.
Among those trends, Felsenthal listed “the continuing decline of traditional institutions in favor of individuals; government dysfunction that has delivered more power and responsibility to business and chasms of wealth and opportunity.”
Time editors have previously defined the title — which last year went to President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris — as going to people who “embodied what was important about the year, for better or for worse.”
In October, Musk’s electric car company’s valuation soared above a trillion dollars, and SpaceX has teamed up with US space agency NASA to launch various missions including a test run of protecting Earth from an asteroid.
The brash South African-born 50-year-old has seen his wealth soar during the pandemic to over $250 billion, according to Forbes’ real-time billionaires list.
He has also courted controversy with his provocative Twitter feed that can attack, joke and provoke — including a poll in November asking Twitter whether he should sell a 10 percent share of his Tesla stock. ‘Wealthy, mostly white men’
Felsenthal noted Musk’s provocative vision is accompanied by a persona which is a “blunt instrument that often seems to revel in division and aggressive mockery as he gives the world access to his id through social media.”
Musk has appeared ever-present in American culture in recent years, amassing 66 million Twitter followers and guest-hosting the famed late-night comedy show Saturday Night Live in May.
Musk speaks ambitiously about his interest in colonizing Mars, and plans orbital flights next year as part of SpaceX’s planned American return to the Moon.
“The goal overall has been to make life multi-planetary and enable humanity to become a spacefaring civilization,” Musk told Time in an interview released with the Person of the Year announcement.
“SpaceX is starting a program to take CO2 out of atmosphere & turn it into rocket fuel. Please join if interested, ” he tweeted later Monday, in an announcement that was as eye-catching as it was short of detail.
Musk has also been known to move markets and the value of cryptocurrencies with a single tweet, but his main terrestrial influence for now is with his electric vehicles.
“Our intent with Tesla was always that we would serve as an example to the car industry, and hope that they also make electric cars so that we can accelerate the transition to sustainable energy,” Musk told Time.
Time notes that in an earlier era interplanetary travel was a collective undertaking that leaders used to rally their nations, but that increasingly private companies are involved.
“To Musk, that is progress, steering capital allocation away from the government to those who will be good stewards of it,” Felsenthal wrote.
“To others, it is testament to capitalism’s failings as staggeringly wealthy, mostly white men play by their own rules while much of society gets left behind,” he added.

Instagram tightens teen defenses as US hearing looms

Instagram announced new protections on Tuesday for young users, a day before the photo-sharing app’s CEO faces a grilling from US lawmakers on whether the platform is “toxic” for children.
The app will be stricter about what it recommends to teen users and will suggest a break if they have been spending a lot of time on the platform, chief executive Adam Mosseri said in a post.
Meta-owned Instagram has been central to the reputational crisis the social media colossus has battled since a whistleblower leaked documents showing executives knew of their sites’ risks for making teens feel badly about themselves.
Mosseri, who appears before a Senate panel on Wednesday, defended the platform in his post, saying: “Every day I see the positive impact that Instagram has for young people everywhere.”
“I want to make sure that it stays that way, which means above all keeping them safe on Instagram,” he added.
The app is also to start “nudging” teens toward new topics if there is one they have been dwelling on for a while and will stop people from mentioning teens who don’t follow them on the platform, Mosseri said.
Lawmakers voiced skepticism over the platform’s capacity to protect kids, as well as the timing of the announcement of the new safety features.
“Meta is attempting to shift attention from their mistakes by rolling out parental guides, use timers and content control features that consumers should have had all along,” said Republican Senator Marsha Blackburn, who will question Mosseri at Wednesday’s hearing.
‘Designed to distract’
Senator Richard Blumenthal, a Democrat who will also attend the hearing, said press reports based on the leaked Facebook documents had shown Instagram’s “toxic impacts.”
“I think it’s a baby step that falls way short of what is necessary to protect children and consumers,” he told AFP, regarding Tuesday’s announcement.
“It seems designed more to distract from the testimony by the Instagram CEO tomorrow than to really advance on children’s safety,” Blumenthal added.
Instagram said its break suggestion feature launched in Australia, Britain, Canada and the United States, and will expand to other countries by early next year.
The platform also introduced an educational hub for parents, to “help them get more involved with their teen’s experiences,” and tools for them to set limits on how much time their children spend in the app, Mosseri said.
Facing pressure, the company had previously announced it would suspend, but not abandon, the development of a version of Instagram meant for users younger than 13.
The leaks from Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen gave new momentum to the push in Washington to regulate social media, which has avoided tough restrictions, as the technology outpaced legislative efforts and partisan deadlock stymied proposals.
A coalition of scholars across the world have urged Facebook’s parent Meta to work cooperatively with outside researchers in studying the company’s impacts on its billions of users.
“We call on you to solicit independent and transparent reviews of all past, present and future research on child and adolescent mental health,” said the letter published on the University of Oxford’s internet institute website.
